The math, not the rent

The calculator apps went rental. Rafter didn't.

The big construction calculators now charge $40 a year, every year, for math that hasn't changed. Rafter does the same jobsite math, shows its work on every answer, and costs less than one year of theirs. Once.

Rafter keypad with ft, in and fraction keys, entering 12 feet 6-3/4 inches
Feet · inch · fraction

Add it the way you read a tape.

Dedicated ft, in and fraction keys, so 12' 6-3/4" goes in exactly as you'd say it. Add, subtract, multiply and divide, and the working line stays on screen so you can check the chain.

Length times length is area, area times depth is volume, straight to cubic yards. Tap the answer to flip it to decimal feet, inches, yards, meters, centimeters or millimeters.

Rafters

Pitch and span in. Cuts and jacks out.

Common rafter length, total rise, plumb and level cut angles, hip and valley length, and the jack table at 12, 16, 19.2 or 24 inches on center. Set the ridge thickness and overhang and everything recomputes as you type.

Pitch converts live between rise-per-12, degrees and percent. Every result carries the per-foot-of-run number from the framing square, so you can check Rafter yourself.

6/12 × 24' span ≈ 13' 4-3/16" common 26.6° plumb
Rafter solver result: common rafter length about 13 feet 4-3/16 inches, plumb and level cuts, hip length and an expanded table of eight jack lengths
Stair solver for an 8 foot 9 inch rise: 14 risers at 7-1/2 inches, 13 treads, stringer length and buy a 14 foot stringer, with green riser and tread code badges
Stairs

Total rise in. Whole layout out.

Measure finished floor to finished floor and Rafter lays out the stair: riser count and height, treads, total run, stringer length, and the stock board to buy.

Riser and tread are checked against IRC defaults with clear pass and fail badges. Your local code is different? Edit the limits in Settings. Step the riser count up or down and watch it all recompute.

Riser 7-1/2" ≤ 7-3/4" Tread 10" ≥ 10"
Square & lumber

Square the deck. Price the pile.

Diagonal squaring tells you exactly how far out of square a layout is, and board feet works the way lumber is actually sold, with the cost.

Diagonal solver: 12 by 16 foot layout measured at 20 feet, showing Square with a within 1/8 inch badge
DiagonalEnter two sides and the diagonal you measured. Rafter shows how long or short it is, down to the sixteenth.
Board feet solver: 26 pieces of 2 by 10 by 12 feet equals 520 board feet, costing 1,820 dollars at 3.50 per board foot
Board feetNominal sizes, quantity and your price per board foot. The joist package total, before you call the yard.
Paperless tape

Every answer lands on the tape.

Every result is saved automatically, from the calculator and every solver. Tap any entry to pull the number back into the calculator.

Star the live numbers and label them by job: garage rafters, deck stairs, the trim order. Then text the list, or send it as a CSV to the GC.

Questions from the jobsite

How accurate are the fractions?
Feet-inch-fraction sums and differences are exact. When a result can't land exactly on your chosen fraction (division and pitch math can do that), Rafter rounds to the nearest 1/8", 1/16" or 1/32" and puts an amber ≈ in front so you always know.
Can I check its work?
Yes. The calculator keeps the working line on screen, and the solvers show the reference numbers a carpenter uses, like the framing-square per-foot-of-run figure on every rafter result.
Does it do metric?
Entry is in feet, inches and fractions. Tap any result to read it in decimal feet, inches, yards, meters, centimeters or millimeters.
Which building code does the stair check use?
IRC 2021 defaults: a 7-3/4" maximum riser and a 10" minimum tread. Both are editable in Settings, so you can match your local code. Always verify with your local authority.
Is there a subscription or in-app purchase?
No. $19.99 once gets everything, including future updates. There are no ads, no account and no pro tier.
What do I need to run it?
An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later. Buy it once and it's yours on every device signed in with your Apple Account.
